The idea that our pet dogs do things to dominate us is alive and well. People tell me all the time that their puppy is jumping on them to "dominate them." So the question is, why won't dominance theory fade away like other old timey and unscientific beliefs? An article from The Association of Pet Behavior Counsellors in the UK gives me hope because it points out that it takes "twenty years for new science to permeate the public conscious." So that means that any day now we should be able to all move on to a more nuanced understanding of our dogs and what motivates their behavior. It can't come soon enough!
